Recently, I’ve heard some funny stories about HOAs. I find that clients are very divided on this topic… some people will never live in an area with an HOA, while others are cool with an HOA.

Why Some Homeowners Don’t Like HOAs

Why does it matter? I understand why people are opposed to an HOA. They bought the house and invested money into the property, and are working to keep it up. These homeowners don’t feel like they need an HOA to tell them how to handle their house. They don’t want to be told how to manage the trash cans or where to park their car.

Most of the time, this mindset is fine! Some people get frustrated by HOAs because of letters that come all the time about the dumbest things, like a few weeds in the spring.

Why Some Homeowners Love HOAs

On the other hand, the HOA rules and enforcement isn’t as irritating as things that happen outside of an HOA, such as people parking their car on the front lawn or painting their house an obnoxious color. When you have a homeowner’s association, there are rules that govern the neighborhood.

HOAs: There is No Right or Wrong Answer

When it comes to an HOA, there is no right or wrong answer here. If you are person who doesn’t want neighbors who are causing problems, then an HOA is a great option. On the other hand, if you like to park your car in the front yard, paint your house a crazy color, or leave your trash cans in the front, then an HOA isn’t for you.
