The Investment Value of Your Primary Residence

For this week, I am going to do something that I really don’t do and that is an opinion piece.

We are going on 8-10 years since the significant fallout from real estate. And, more and more, I am starting to see people talk about starting their investment value with their primary residence, and they are paying more attention to this.

Most of us are not good real estate investors and that it just because we don’t really study it. And there is no question about it that your house you own as your primary residence is a very significant investment.

But, most of us are not sophisticated enough to actually do smart things, do short-term plays that really increase the value of that investment of our primary residence.

My overall thinking is if you are a real estate investor, great! Get really good at it and go buy a bunch of real estate investment property and go make a bunch of money.

I truly believe real estate is one of the greatest ways to increase your net worth and really build a huge financial future for yourself.

However, that is not going to happen through your primary residence. We need to get into the mindset that your primary residence, the place your family rests its head at night, is about security, comfort, and a place to build a family with love.

It’s not about the investment value! Your primary residence needs to have a nice, comfortable payment that allows you to do what you want to do, but you need to disconnect yourself with the investment value of your primary residence.

Wouldn’t it be great if you just bought that place, lived in it for 10, 20, or 30 years and get it paid off, and then it’s a place you can live, other than taxes and insurance, completely free in your retirement?

That is the real investment value of your primary residence.
